Carolyn Wesolek & Steve Babcock Bios~
Carolyn
Carolyn grew up on Long Island in NY. She went to Kellenberg Memorial Catholic High School in Uniondale, NY and then graduated from Adelphi University in Garden City, NY with a BA double major in Environmental Science and Anthropology. She was a member of the high school equestrian club and competed on the Adelphi Intercollegiate Equestrian Team in jumping. After undergraduate school Carolyn began her travels around the country. She lived in Staunton, VA for a summer while working at Shenandoah Farm, an Akhal Teke stud farm. Then she lived in Corpus Christi, TX for 2 years while attending Texas A&M for graduate school. After graduate school, she moved to Decatur, AL where she worked her first ‘real’ job as an environmental engineer for the Champion Paper mill in Courtland. After Champion was bought by International paper, she accepted a job as an Environmental Engineer in Oregon at the Willamette Industries, Albany Paper Mill. Carolyn is an environmentally minded person who is proud to say that she practices environmental recycling at home and at work…:o)
Through these adventures around the country her love of horses has followed her. Carolyn bought her first horse, Crystal, an Irish thoroughbred, in Alabama and trained with Joane Friar, an accomplished FEI level rider. After moving to Oregon, she bought Rising Truth, affectionately known as Princess, and began her dressage training. She loves the preciseness and beauty of Dressage, but is known to pop over a fence or two occasionally. She is particularly well suited at retraining horses and teaching young horses proper manners. She rode dressage for several years and then moved onto Competitive Driving and is currently taking driving lessons with her Haflinger Marvesson and competing in local CDEs with Marv & her husband, Steve. She is still taking ridden dressage lessons and has started to jump Marvy. She is also very much enjoying starting dressage & driving with her 2 Dutch Registered Friesians, Juliet and Layla. She basically enjoys learning as much about horses as she can.
Stephen
Steve grew up in Bieber, CA on a 1500 acre Black Angus cattle ranch. He rode horses and worked cattle from a very young age. His mom tells funny stories of him and his cousin, Jerry, going out trail riding at the age of 10 and retuning without their bridles..!?! He attended Big Valley High School, home of the Cardinals where he played baseball, football, basketball, and track. After high school he worked in various saw mills before moving to Oregon. In Oregon he began working at the Albany Paper Mill in 1976. In 1992 he bid into the Maintenance shop where he currently works as a millwright.
As life would have it, his return to the farm is with his new wife, Carolyn (a NYer)….! At the age of 50 he has enjoyed getting back to his roots of raising cattle and riding horses. He might even dabble in competitive driving with the Friesians. Both of his sons live nearby, and although they were not raised on a farm they have gained partnership in the farm though cattle ownership. Steve feels he has passed on his love of the outdoors to them as both of his sons fish and hunt. One of the Friesians’ future purposes may even be as pack horse…!?!
